Addicted to Statement Necklaces...

Ever since I started paying more attention to how I dress, I've found myself stocking up on statement necklaces. They brighten up basics and make you look like you put a LOT more effort in your outfit than you really did! Here are my 4 most recent additions:

ZARA Combined CHAIN Necklace - I love the combination of blue and green in this necklace - it's gorgeous!

ZARA bib statement necklace turquoise
Original here (mine is the turquoise version)

Wearing it:

Forever21 Studded Tweed Jacket, GAP jeans, Target leopard heels, Michael Kors Selma bag

ILY Couture Bloom Necklace: I bought this during their recent sale ($16 rather than $68!!!) to wear with maxi dresses on our beach holiday BUT I found myself loving how it brightens up my rainy day fall outfits too!

Ily Couture Bloom necklace
Original here, Identical from Bauble Bar for $36 here

Wearing it:

Old Navy Sweater, Garage Jeans, Hunter Original Gloss Boots

Crystal & Mint Necklace: I've seen this necklace on a lot of US sale sites such as VeryJane - I think it was inspired by a J.Crew necklace.

My version from eBay, Similar here and here

Wearing it:

Old Navy sweater, H&M shirt, Target Mint jeans (similar), Old Navy flats

Green Tessellate necklace: Now this necklace I know for sure was inspired by a J.Crew original. I found a white version at Winners last year - and I wore it so much that I decided I needed an emerald version too!

My version from eBay - just search for "tessellate necklace"

Wearing it:

H&M shirt, Garage jeans, Old Navy leopard flats (similar here from Target)

And as seen in my closet organization post, this is the jewelry organizer I use to store my necklaces...did I mention that it's double-sided? So there's definitely space for more - not sure if that is good or bad!

Do you like wearing statement necklaces? Which of the four pictured above do you like the best?

Bag Review: A Closer Look at the Michael Kors Selma Top-Zip Satchel in Luggage

I've made my LAST bag purchase for the year - the Michael Kors Selma in Luggage...well technically Hubby purchased it as my anniversary gift - but I definitely had a hand in choosing it!

Large Selma Top-Zip Satchel

The Selma has been on my radar ever since I spotted Noelle's black version. The simple and classic structure reminds me of 2 other popular and MUCH pricier bags - the Prada Saffiano Tote and the Hermes Birkin.

Celebs with birkins
Selma on the left (Top: Ashley Greene, Botton: Selena Gomez) Birkin on the right (Eva Longoria)

As you can see in the pictures above, the Selma has elements of the Birkin without being a copy - including similar dimensions, a structured, boxy shape and metal feet. With regards to the Prada tote, the Selma features a simple top handle design with a discreet logo in the front. They are also constructed of the same material - saffiano leather - a cross-hatched leather that is highly stain and scratch-resistant.

Choosing My Bag:

At the store, I had a VERY hard time deciding between the Navy and Luggage versions of the Selma - but I don't think you can blame me...when I shared this picture on Instagram, commenters were ALSO equally divided between the 2 colors!

Although I went for the Large Selma Top-Zip Satchel, I am also in LOVE with all the studded options: the ADORABLE cross-body bag, the North/South version, and the oh-so-chic clutch.

Wearing my Selma Bag:

The Selma is one of my largest handbags, measuring 9"H x 12 1/4"W x 3 1/2"D. Because of its structure and hardware, it's slightly heavier than my Balenciaga City and Louis Vuitton Neverfull PM - but it's still completely manageable (I'm not a fan of unnecessarily heavy bags - my back can't take the strain!). The cross-body strap is a nice touch but I don't plan on using it too often, as it doesn't seem like it could support the weight of the bag on a regular basis.

A 360 view of the Selma:

What's in my Michael Kors Selma

The interior of the bag is very spacious, with lots of pockets and a strap attachment for your keys. The lining is a cream material embossed with the MK logo - not my favorite - but since I use a purse organizer, I hardly notice the print. I love the metal feet - it makes it easy to set down without worrying about staining the bottom of the bag. I think the Selma would be a great travel and/or work bag - it's roomy enough to fit in all the essentials - plus an iPad and water bottle, and the material is sturdy and won't show wear.

Are you a fan of structured bags? Does the Selma bag remind you of the Prada Saffiano Tote and Hermes Birkin?

UPDATE:

Spotted this adorable mini-studded version of the Selma during my last visit to the Michael Kors store - it's pictured next to my Selma for size comparison:

And I'm not the only one in my family adoring Michael Kors' latest offerings! Here's my mother's latest purchase - she got the Weston bag in Luggage (love the tassel detail) and the Fulton wallet with Rose Gold hardware.

My Fashion Week Experience - Target show and Backstage with Maybelline & Redken

World Mastercard Fashion Week is in full swing in Toronto - I was SO excited to get tickets to the Target show, as well as an opportunity to view hair and makeup backstage.

What I wore:

H&M lace dress (identical), Express vest (similar), Nine West boots & Michael Kors Selma in Luggage.

Backstage with Maybelline's Lead Make-up Artist Grace Lee

Clockwise from Top Left: Grace demonstrating the Target look; The finished look on the model; Grace's make-up table; Erin Wasson - Grace's inspiration for the show.

Runway Look for Target: Grace was inspired by lead model Erin Wasson's cool-girl look, describing it as Girl Next Door with a hint of Rocker Chic.
How-to:
Eyes - Smoky brown eyes were created with Bad to the Bronze Color Tattoo blended with Colorshow Cream Liner. Lashes were coated with generous layers of Colossal Volume Smoky Eyes mascara. Brows were filled in with Master Shape Brow - a one step pencil combining both color and wax.
Face - Fit Me Foundation was pressed onto the skin using a Beauty Blender sponge. Dream Lumi Touch concealer was blended as an under-eye highlight. On the cheeks, a darker shade of Fit Me Foundation stick was applied using a MAC 168 brush for contouring, with a cream blush (not yet available) dabbed on the apples for color. Grace finished the look with her custom concoction - Barely Brazen Color Tattoo Pigment mixed with a sheer Baby Lips gloss to highlight the cheekbones - this looked amazing and it's definitely a trick I want to try at home!
Lips - Nude Illusion Color Elixir - a recently released super-pigmented gloss - was applied on the lips.

Backstage with Redken Artist and Lead Stylist Jorge Joao

Runway Look for Target: Natural Beach Waves
How-to: Hair is pre-treated with setting lotion - Iron Shape 11 - to hold curl. Random pieces are spiral wrapped around a curling wand and pinned in place. Hair is left to completely cool in order to lock-in the curl. Then hair is unpinned and finger combed to loosen the curls. Fashion Waves - a texturizing sea spray - is applied to add texture and enhance curls.

Down the Runway:

Some of the colorful looks spotted from our seats at the show! I've included the official press photos by George Pimental below for a clearer view of some of my favorite looks:

Am absolutely obsessed with this Mossimo black and white graphic print -it looks amazing on its own as a dress, but also gorgeous paired with metallics or deep blue. I can't decide WHICH version (pant/dress/skirt) I'll pick up - but I'm DEFINITELY buying at least one of these pieces!

Also found inspiration in these casual looks - loved the spotted scarf and rolled-up blazer on the right, the MUST-HAVE leopard booties from the middle pic. As for the glamorous lumberjack look on the left - plaid shirt, sparkly necklace and distressed jeans - I think I'll be copying this from head-to-toe (although I might cheat and wear flats instead of heels!)

Goodies & Products to Try:

Between the backstage media lounge and the sponsor booths before the show, I received quite a lot of products to test out including Redken Color Extend shampoo and conditioner, and their star backstage product (mentioned above): Fashion Waves. I'm also super-excited to try the Maybelline Colossal Smoky Eyes Mascara and Baby Lips balm - and cult-favorite nail color, Essie's Mint Candy Apple. Hubby and I received the cutest gifts during the Target show too - cozy flannel throw pillows and a Bullseye Snowglobe!

Hope you liked reading about my experience at the Target show! Which Target looks are you most excited for? Check out the rest of the runway pictures here.

5 Pretty Things with Theresa Longo + Recent Fall Outfits!

I met Theresa Longo in the L'Oreal TIFF lounge (my TIFF post). Not only was she super-friendly and sweet, she's a  beauty queen/model/actress AND fitness expert! As I'm perpetually nosy about other people's beauty secrets and fashion loves - I asked Theresa if I could feature her in my first "5 Pretty Things" post - hope you enjoy reading her answers!

1) What face wash and moisturizer do you use?
I use Proactiv 3 step Face Wash ... and I use Vivier Skin C&E Peptides for Moisturizer

I use L'Oreal True Match Sand Beige Foundation, YSL Touche Eclat Concealer, - I skip Blush and use Benefit "They're Real" Mascara or L'Oreal's Voluminous Power Collagen Mascara

My Favorite Bag is an Italian Made Leather "Bagghy" Bag ... It is big enough to travel with and the pattern is completely unique! Attached is a photo of the bag.

4) What do you do to stay healthy? How often do you work out/Any special diet you follow?
I work out often. Every couple days I target different muscle groups. I switch it up between arms, abs, and legs. I have an excellent boxing coach who I work with on a consistent basis. I began boxing at BEL Boxing and have kept it up over the last few years.  I practice a vegan diet. I take a ton of supplements, including Vega All in One Nutritional Shake every morning at breakfast. I take multiple vitamins daily and I never drink alcohol or refined sugar. To stay lean I avoid eating bread at all costs. You can check out work out tips on my blog ;)

I have an Italian background with my Dad's side of the family originating from Sicily. I was crowned Miss Italy North America in 2011-12, and I learned to speak conversational  Italian before departing for Italy to compete for the crown in the World Finals of Miss Italy of the world. It was an incredible experience I will never forget. It was an honor for me to learn more about my heritage while representing North America on the world stage.

I love how unique Theresa's favorite bag is! And her workout & diet routine is so inspirational and impressive...if only I could cut out refined sugar completely from my diet!!! Thanks for answering my questions Theresa :-)

Make-up in the Mail: Vichy Idéalia, Skinceuticals AOX Eye Gel, Live Clean Lovely Lips & Kellet Skincare

"Make-up in the Mail" posts feature products that I've been sent to sample. I take my time to thoroughly test and review products, but I don't want my readers to miss out on the latest and greatest on the market while I formulate my reviews. Thus "Make-up in the Mail" posts introduce new products and highlight their special features - with future in-depth reviews of certain products to follow!

Product: Vichy Idéalia Life Serum ($59)
What is it? A serum that refines pores, evens out skintone and makes you look fresh and radiant.
Why is it special? Uses LR2412 (derived from Jasmine) and LHA (derived from salicylic acid) to repair and protect while improving skin texture. Has a hypoallergenic scent which smells UNBELIEVABLY AMAZING - a light combination of green tea, jasmine, lily & musk - it makes application such a pleasure! Contains radiance-boosting pearls so that it also works as a primer.
Who is it good for? Anyone who wants radiant skin - especially people who worry about the effects of "behavioral aging" - i.e. skin affected by exposure to stress, UV rays, pollution, and/or a poor diet.

Product: Skinceuticals AOX+ Eye Gel ($80)
What is it? Antioxidant eye treatment that treats signs of aging, photo-damage and fatigue.
Why is it special? Combines effective antioxidants (Phloretin, L-Ascorbic Acid and Ferulic Acid) with targeted actives (Evergreen derivative and Caffeine) to protect against skin damage while reducing puffiness and under-eye bags.
Who is it good for? People who want to use powerful ingredients to protect the skin around their eyes and keep it looking smooth.

Product: LIVE CLEAN Lovely Lips ($4.29 each)
What is it? A lip balm range containing 3 formulations - Soothing (Peppermint Oil), Moisturizing (Jojoba Oil) and Protecting (Vitamin E)

Who is it good for? Anyone who wants soft lips without having to worry about ingesting harmful ingredients and chemicals.

Product: Kellett Clear Skincare Trial Kit ($75)
What is it? Kit containing 3 products - Polishing Gel Cleanser, Moisturizing Gel and Clarifying Acne Treatment
Why is it special? The Kellet line is created by Dr Lisa Kellett, a top Canadian Dermatologist. I first heard about this skincare kit on a Facebook Beauty Forum that I'm a member of. Every single FB group member who has tried the Polishing Gel Cleanser RAVES about how amazing it is!
Who is it good for? People who suffer from adult acne and want to use specially formulated products that address blemishes while treating signs of aging.

Have you heard of or tried any of these new products?

Fall Clothing Haul: Camo Jeans, Sparkly Sweatshirts & Wrap Dresses

With all the amazing 30-40% promos at GAP, Banana Republic & Old Navy, I've been doing a LOT of online ordering. Some of the items are DEFINITE keepers - others will be going back, but I thought I'd share their "fitting room review" photos anyway, in case anyone else was thinking of ordering them.

Camo Jeans & Chambray Shirt
GAP 1969 Camo Front Zip Always Skinny Jeans / Minkoff bag / ZARA necklace

These 1969 Camo Front Zip Always Skinny Jeans are definitely staying. I think GAP will be my new go-to source for denim...even on sale their jeans are pricey BUT their material is very thick and sucks me in - definitely worth paying up for!

Old Navy Fox Graphic Sweater
Old Navy Sequined Sweatshirt / Old Navy Fox Graphic Sweater

Old Navy has a lot of cute sweaters & sweatshirts this fall- their sequined sweatshirts are reminiscent of J.Crew's beaded sweatshirts at a fraction of the cost! And I've been seeing their fox graphic sweater EVERYWHERE - it's adorable! I'm trying to decide which of these 3 I should keep - right now I'm leaning towards the grey sweatshirt.

Old Navy Crepe Shift Dress
Red Floral Long-Sleeved Wrap Dress / Red Print Crepe Shift Dress / Pink Stripe Long-Sleeved Wrap Dress / Navy Blue Cap-Sleeved Wrap Dress.

I ordered a variety of Old Navy dresses to try on. Pictured from left to right are the Red Floral Long-Sleeved Wrap Dress, Red Print Crepe Shift Dress, Pink Stripe Long-Sleeved Wrap Dress and Navy Blue Cap-Sleeved Wrap Dress. After trying them on, I only really like the long-sleeved wrap dresses - I'm definitely keeping the striped one - I think it would look great in the fall with black boots. I kind of wish I had ordered the Black Birds Wrap Dress too- it's a timeless classic!

GAP Classic Trench Coat
BR Flared Trench / GAP Classic Trench / BR Outlet Trench

And finally a quick note about trench coats - I ordered the GAP classic trench to compare to the Banana Republic Flared Trench. Although they're both XS, the BR trench seems slimmer and more fitted around the shoulder and chest. I prefer the color of the GAP trench but the BR one is made of higher quality material. The picture on the right is one I took at the BR outlet - this trench was less than $80 and it fit perfectly (I loved the design and the tortoise-shell buttons) - but the material was very wrinkle prone and the stitching wasn't that great (it had loose threads). If I could design the perfect trench coat, it would have the design of the BR Factory coat, the color of the GAP one and the luxe fabric of the BR Flared trench...am I being too picky?

Help me decide - which sweater & dress should I keep?

Who's My Celebrity Doppelganger & Monthly Must-Reads

Question of the Month: Who is your celebrity doppelgangers? Do people keep telling you that you remind them of someone?

I don't really look like any celebrity - I've certainly never been mistaken for someone else - no red carpet treatment for me! I have been told in the past that I resemble Katie Holmes & Winnie from the Wonder Years, but I think that's more due to mannerisms than appearance.

Several people over time have told me I resemble Jill Hennessy from Law & Order. I never watched the show but here are some pics I found on google:

I used the Celebrity App on MyHeritage to see what they came up with...lots of different choices with no repetition - so not really much help either!

Although I don't resemble a celeb myself, I'm forever seeing doppelgangers in bloggers & Youtubers I follow - here are some that I've noticed: Barefoot Blonde - Jennifer Morrison from House; Andrea's Choice - Rosario Dawson; FleurDeForce - Fearne Cotton; Tanya Burr - Kimberly Walsh from Girls Aloud; ThePersianBabe - Kate Middleton; ttsandra - Pippa Middleon...I could go on forever but I'll stop here!

Have you been told you resemble a Celeb? Who do you look like?

Shampoos....I've got plenty!

Is it normal to have as many shampoos in rotation as I do? The obsession with finding the BEST products led me into beauty blogging - so I guess it shouldn't be a surprise that I'm forever experimenting with haircare. As my shower is fully stocked with shampoos, it's a natural subject for my next "I've got plenty" post.

I have fine, highlighted hair and a sensitive scalp - so there are certain qualities I look for when choosing a shampoo. I use 2 separate shampoos every time I wash my hair - a volume-boosting one for my roots, and a moisturizing one for the length of my hair. I prefer sulfate-free shampoos when possible, to help protect my highlights.  Here are some mini-reviews of shampoos that I've recently used:

1) Kerastase Cristalliste
Features: (Contains Sulfates) Range specially formulated for long hair with ingredients to leave it soft and supple.
My thoughts: My hair never felt particularly soft or supple after using this shampoo - it's completely average. Although I will use the rest of this up, I don't plan on repurchasing it.

2) Burts Bees Very Volumizing Shampoo (DISCONTINUED FORMULA)
Features:  (Sulfate-free) Uses a blend of pomegrenate, moringa seed, coconut and sunflower oil to cleanse hair and soy amino acids to create volume.
My thoughts: The old formula was perfection - I use it on my roots to create MAJOR volume (it's too drying for the rest of my hair). Since this version is no longer available, I only use this precious bottle before special events. Steer clear of the reformulated version (pictured here) - the ingredients are completely different. It's not as volumizing and actually made my hair fall out!

3) Kiss My Face Big Body Shampoo
Features: (Sulfate-free) Organic ingredients including Rosemary, Nettle, Lavender and Aloe Vera help remove build-up and create volume in fine hair.
My thoughts: Not as dramatically volumizing as the Burts Bees shampoo, but it does  provide a good amount of volume while using a multitude of natural ingredients which help promote overall hair and scalp health.

4) Mane N Tail Shampoo
Features: (Contains Sulfates) Protein-based shampoo for horses that is a cult-favorite for soft, shiny and healthy human hair too!
My thoughts: I had heard about this for ages, but only purchased it after reading this post from Skylette (have you seen her hair? She could be a Pantene model!). I used it for a couple of months and I LOVED it - my hair felt very strong, shiny and thick. I stopped using it when I got highlights because of the sulfates - but I think this is a good (and effective) drugstore staple.

5) L'Oreal Evercreme Cleansing Conditioner
Features: (Sulfate-free) A one-step product that gently cleanses hair and deep conditions it at the same time.
My thoughts: Based on the same concept as WEN cleansing conditioners and "no-poo/co-washing" (No shampoo/conditioner-washing), this product is a life-saver for long, fragile and/or damaged hair. It infuses the hair with moisture without any stripping or drying. Although I mainly use this on the length of my hair, it's also very soothing on my scalp. It's my go-to moisturizing shampoo, and I plan on using it on my roots during the change of seasons to combat the havoc central heating wreaks on my scalp.

6) Live Clean Monoi Oil Strengthening Shampoo
Features: (Sulfate-free) Contains Monoi Oil, Jojoba Oil and Bamboo Extract to moisturize and strengthen hair,
My thoughts: Has a gorgeous coconut smell and lathers a lot for a sulfate-free shampoo. However, I have to be careful to avoid my scalp, because something in this shampoo irritates my sensitive scalp - it feels like it is stinging, so I only use this on the length of my hair.

7) L'Oreal Vitamino Color
Features: (Contains Sulfates) "Preserves, protects and adds shine to color-treated hair."
My thoughts: Gentle on my scalp and leaves my hair so soft and fragrant. I usually take this when I travel because it works well for both my roots and length. Although it is formulated for color-treated hair, it does contain sulfates - but I've heard that the "Delicate-color" version of this shampoo is sulfate-free, so I'm eager to try that next.

8) LUSH Seanik Solid Shampoo
Features: (Contains Sulfates) Sea salt for volume, Seaweed to soften hair, lemon oil for shine & floral oils for fragrance.
My thoughts: Although LUSH seems like it would make amazing natural products, this shampoo is a disappointment. It smells like dish soap and performs like dish soap. The first ingredient is a sulfate, and rather than volumizing my hair, it severely dries it out - almost to the point of it feeling chemically damaged. I don't think I'll be using up the rest of this product.

WHAT'S NEXT?

I'm still on the look out for sulfate-free Volumizing shampoos (since I'll eventually have to replace my discontinued Burts Bees Shampoo). Here are some that I rounded up in the natural aisle of my grocery store the other day:

HUGO Naturals Volumizing Vanilla & Sweet Orange Shampoo  / Nature's Gate Volumizing Shampoo Lemon Grass & Clary Sage / Nature Clean / Kiss My Face Big Body (new packaging or reformulated?) / Avalon Organics Volumizing Shampoo Rosemary

I am doing some research before bringing one of these home to try - from what I've read so far, Nature's Gate is in the lead. I've also heard amazing things about the Pureology line - so I plan on trying their Volumizing shampoo too.

What hair type do you have - and what's your favorite shampoo?

DISCLAIMER: The L'Oreal Evercreme Cleansing Conditioner and Live Clean Monoi Oil Shampoo were sent to me, but I am under no obligation to provide a favorable review.  As you can tell, I wrote my honest unbiased thoughts (as always!!!).

Mommy & Daughter Manicures: Attending the Kiss Gel Nails Party

My lovely friend Elaine from Toronto Beauty Reviews hosted the most AMAZING party last weekend at DesignHerCo Studio.

The place was set up beautifully - with jewelry-making crafts & Kiss Press-On nails for the kids, and 4 gel manicure stations for the adults. I didn't take too many photos of the event because I was too excited to try the gel polish (and also super-busy chatting with Mehreen & Oliva!).

Mommy & Daughter nails - gel for me, press-ons for her! Mini is not usually allowed to wear nailpolish so she was so excited about her floral nails!

I fell in love with the color I chose: Petal...it's a super-flattering mix of Essie's Fiji and OPI's Mod About You - definitely a shade I'd want to wear for 2 weeks non-stop!

Application and Removal Instructions

Applying the Gel nails was surprisingly simple - it was just like a regular manicure except that you place your nails underneath the LED Gel lamp between coats. This process is meant to harden the polish so that it lasts without chipping for 14 days.

Starter SystemGel Polish & Pro LED Gel Lamp

Just getting the chance to apply a gel manicure and meeting lovely friends at the event was enough for me - I had no idea that we would be SO GENEROUSLY gifted with our own GEL sets !!!

I'm SO excited about this - we'll be going on a beach holiday in December and I had planned on going to a salon for a gel mani/pedi for our trip ...but now I can do my my own gel treatment at home! It's like having my own mini-salon.

Thank you so much to Elaine and Kiss Nails for such a wonderful event!

What I wore to the party was was completely inspired by the outfit Wendy styled for Jean in their video collaboration. Have you seen it? It's my fave youtube video EVER (view it here).

MY OUTFIT: Top: Express, Jeans: GAP, Heels: Target, Bag: Marc Jacobs, Necklace: F21 (similar)

Have you tried Gel nails (either at home or at a salon)? How did you like them?
