Who Takes Your Outfit Photos?

I know a lot of bloggers work with professional photographers - and I can see how that can be very efficient: you only have to get glammed up once, and you can take a couple of weeks worth of photos in one go. But I'm not ready to take that step yet...here's why:

1) I'm just so comfortable with my #InstagramHusband - let's be honest, it's not like taking photos of me is Hubby's FAVOURITE thing to do! BUT - he is happy to commit to one session a week. He sees what a difference good photography makes to my blog - and he knows how important my blog is to me. Because he's my husband - I can tell him exactly what I want from a photo - he has a good eye, but is also completely open to instruction - and will frame the shot exactly how I want it. (p.s. it works both ways - I help Hubby a lot with his work too!)

2) We have a lot of flexibility - You might wonder how bloggers take outfit photos in the Winter WITHOUT a jacket. As someone who gets cold VERY easily - here's what we do...we park at our photoshoot location, jump out to take photos for 5 minutes, head back into the car to warm up...and repeat as needed! Who else but family would do that for you, LOL?

3) I can't smile indefinitely - Getting dressed up and taking photos is SUCH a fun part of blogging - it's amazing to create the vision that you have in mind. But I have my limits - at the moment - two outfit changes are my max, and then I'm all smiled out and can't pose for any more photos!

4) I can choose which photos I like the best - and I own the rights to my photos - I've attended events covered by professional photographers - and after the event I'll receive a fraction of the photos that were taken. I completely understand why - it's not possible edit every photo - so the photographers have to narrow it down. The problem is - their aesthetic may be different from mine. I like having visual control - and also knowing that I own my photos and don't have to ask for permission from anyone else when working with a brand.

These are the reasons I prefer taking outfit photos with hubby (for now) - but I know every blogger makes the choice that is right for their blog. A lot of my friends work with professional photographers and achieve a balance that works for them! If my workload increases, then I'll certainly hire a professional because I wouldn't want to put undue pressure on my family.

And there are definitely times when our amateur photography and editing skills are not sufficient - I've worked with professional photographers on bigger blog projects (Mapleview, Grand Hotel, Fairmont) - and their work has been in a different league from anything we could ever hope to produce!

I'd love to read about your photoshoot experiences - who takes your photos? And HOW do you take your photos in Winter without freezing?

  1. I like this post! I'm always super awkward about the photo aspect and it's refreshing to hear from a blogger who uses her hubby!

  4. Number 4! So true!! When hiring photographers for events that I've hosted, I just wish they would edit whatever they want but provide me with all of the pics taken. That way if I liked a certain picture/pose, I can go back and request that one pic to be edited. It's worked out for me in the past. Just something that needs to be addressed when hiring a photographer and most are ok with providing all proofs taken. Xoxo

    1. I know what you mean! I'm actually in a phototographers Facebook group so I TOTALLY understand things from their viewpoint - if they're going to have their name associated with the photos, it has to be completely in line with their aesthetic etc. But it's true that depending on who you work with - they can offer a lot of flexibility - such as a chance to pick out any photo you like. And if you can find a photographer that completely gets you - it makes all the difference in the world!

  5. Love this look and your post - it makes me feel so much better lol My husband takes all my outfit pictures first because I can't afford to have a professional protographer right now and second, he tries sooo hard to make sure the pictures come out perfect. I wouldn't want to give that awayyy... It's so cute how he tries so hard because he knows my blog is important to me.

  7. We might be twins separated at birth Zeba! My hubby takes my photos too, and I love it for the exact reasons you listed! I'm a control freak when it comes to my blog, so it's nice to have him put my vision to life. I can only do two outfits too, but most of the time I only do one, which is why I don't post as often as other bloggers. What you see is what I wore! I'd love to do a professional photo shoot at some point, and that's a personal goal of mine. But mostly, I like my insta husband :)

  9. I'm not exactly a fashion blogger by the definition - I put together outfits on Polyvore, but I do sometimes post outfits on my Instagram and pictures are always taken by my mom, friends, my tripod :D
I agree that it's just easier to have somebody close to you do it.

  10. It's so awesome y'all have the outfit shots down to a science! My poor husband TRIES, but I finally gave up asking for his help because he doesn't understand photographing PEOPLE at all and our schedules are so insane there's no way we'd get in even a 1 hour photography session per week.
